Understanding the Basics

Does homeowners insurance cover floods?

By Roni Rivers, Licensed Insurance AdvisorReviewed

No. Standard homeowners policies exclude flood damage. You need a separate flood policy through the NFIP or a private flood carrier.

Flood is defined as water that rises from the ground or from overflowing bodies of water. It is excluded from every standard homeowners policy. Even if you are not in a high-risk flood zone, low-cost preferred-risk flood policies are available and worth considering — about 25% of flood claims come from outside high-risk zones.
