How much personal liability coverage do I need?

By Roni Rivers, Licensed Insurance AdvisorReviewed

Most homeowners should carry at least $300,000 in personal liability — and $500,000 to $1M if they have any meaningful assets, a pool, or teen drivers. An umbrella policy starts around $200/year for $1M.

Personal liability defends you if someone sues you for an injury or accident on your property. The cost difference between $100k and $500k of liability is usually small. Once you reach the limit of any underlying policy, an umbrella adds $1M+ of additional coverage across home, auto, and watercraft for a few hundred dollars per year. We recommend most clients pair home and auto with at least $300k underlying limits and a $1M umbrella.
